All the news from Shopify Winter '25 Edition
Shopify has presented the Winter '25 Edition , an update focused on various improvements and updates that mainly aim to strengthen the robustness and performance of the platform. There are over 150 new features presented in this edition , as the official Shopify website itself says, these are mainly changes that aim to improve the user experience and make the platform smoother and easier to manage.
A “ boring ” Winter Edition, as the presenters of this massive update have decided to rename it, but only because, as they point out, they prefer to focus on the general improvement of the platform without diving into big innovative novelties, at least for now. If you find it boring to read all 150+ updates point by point , there is also a “ fun ” version on the site that transforms each update into a fun and absurd zapping on a virtual TV. Try it and believe it .
So let's take a closer look at some of the biggest updates that have come out of this Winter Edition.
Shopify Winter '25 Edition's Most Exciting Updates
Among the many updates shown , many focus on checkout optimizations with reduced loading times and advanced customizations , there are also new extensions for customer accounts, innovative in-store tools and expanded support for AI in semantic search. Among all these innovations we have selected ten that could become very relevant for the user experience of current and future merchants.

Metaobjects everywhere
Metaobjects are now available in any part of the theme , even on the homepage, whereas before they could only be used on product pages and collections. This data allows you to create structured and reusable content. Whether it's highlighting reviews or influencer profiles, they can be easily integrated into different pages of an online shop.
“Pay X, Get Y” Promotions with Subscriptions
With new discount options, you can now offer customers free products when they sign up for a subscription . This feature opens up new opportunities to incentivize subscriptions and improve loyalty.
Retail returns without verification
Processing returns without receipts or order numbers is now easier for retail staff. Refunds can be issued in the form of gift cards, improving in-store service management.
Customer Metafield on POS
Starting today, merchants can view and edit customer metafields directly from Shopify POS. This enables more effective personalization and better data collection for an optimized customer experience.
Checkout Blocks on multiple pages
Checkout customization is now accessible to all merchants , regardless of their Shopify plan. With the free Checkout Blocks app, all users will be able to edit the order status pages and thank you page, while those with Shopify Plus or higher will be able to edit all other pages in the checkout process.
Chat in checkout
With new checkout extensions, you can now add a chat app to assist your customers during the checkout process . This feature will be available to everyone on the Thank You page or other checkout pages for Shopify Plus users, although there is no sign of this extension in the developer documentation yet.
Customer Account Extensions
New extensions let you customize customer account pages without writing code. Merchants can now add options like order management and subscriptions, giving customers more control over their operations.
Creating emails from products
With Shopify Email, you can quickly launch promotional campaigns directly from a product detail page. Quick and intuitive templates make it easy to send personalized emails.
Natural Language Search
Semantic Search, now available in multiple languages, allows customers to search for products using natural language. This innovation, which we remind you must activate , is integrated with Shopify Translate and Adapt, and improves the browsing experience for a global audience.
Trigger from metaobject in Flow
Shopify Flow can now trigger automated workflows , like sending thank you emails or personalized notifications, even more dynamically.

Lots of interesting new features, to which something is also added dedicated to developers, in fact Shopify definitively abandons the development of APIs with the REST protocol in favor of the more recent and efficient GraphQL protocol.
Shopify Italy Country Manager Paolo Picazio commented on these news on his official LinkedIn profile saying:
“ We focused on what really matters: eliminating friction, optimizing processes and offering Italian and international merchants increasingly solid tools to grow their business. It is a declaration of intent: to offer an infrastructure so reliable and high-performance that it becomes invisible, because it does exactly what it is supposed to do.
In an era where everything changes rapidly, we try to make commerce simpler, more creative and without barriers between online and offline .”
An update that therefore focuses on the foundations of Shopify to make the platform always better. All that remains is to try out all these new features first-hand, both on the developer side and on the merchant and customer side.
